Viewed on television before the war part of the film evokes distant memories of the old man confides to friend. In 1935 Paul was head of security guards block the death in prison Cold Mountain. His duties included the draining of the convicts on death row for a long corridor lined green lining, called the "green miles". One of the convicts were black John Coffey, convicted of murdering two white girls. Coffey had healing capabilities. Through touch was able to remove a painful ailment, for which Paul suffered.
